Sam,
When two evils fight you should try not to get involved or celebrate until both have been defeated. Indeed, you should ensure that you build up your own capacity to prevent any undesirable fallout from their fight, which may turn out to be much more vicious and unpredictable than you may have imagined.
The AFRC/RUF and the individuals who have rallied to its defence are an assortment of conflicting interests. What holds them together is their common disdain for legally constituted authority and property rights, as well as their belief in the power of the gun to get what they want. This applies to all factions, whether Steven Bio-led or not. The reported coup is not likely to be the last before the junta finally capitulates. Trying to get involved in its internal quarrels may blunt the initiative to focus on tilting the military balance in favour of the forces of redemption.
There are obviously some among the junta who want to strike a good deal for themselves before they are finally overwhelmed by the forces of liberation; and there are others who are determined to fight it out to the end. These tensions are bound to continue, with individuals in the drama changing sides as they deem fit. But celebrations of the sort that one saw with the so-called Palmer-led coup against Sankoh last March, which turned out to be hollow, may be ill-advised. If members of the junta and their collaborators decide to deal with each other before surrendering to ECOMOG, that should be their own problem. ECOMOG and the Kabbah government should focus on the main issue, which is to deploy ECOMOG troops in the country and disarm all opposing forces.
With best wishes,
Yusuf
